BASPA II

300 MW Baspa Stage II Project is the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) project after the Government of India liberalized the power policy by inviting private sector participation for setting up hydropower project on “BOO” basis

Baspa Hydro-electric project stage II (300 MW) is the first plant of this size in the private sector and is an environment friendly devoid of any rehabilitation or resettlement issue.
The MOU was signed with Government of Himachal Pradesh in November, 1991 and was granted approval to develop 300 MW Baspa Stage-II Hydroelectric project in private sector on "Build, Own and Operate" basis by the Government of Himachal Pradesh in October 1992. The project was fully commissioned on 8th June, 2003 and has since been generating power.
The project is located on the river Baspa, a tributary of river Satluj in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh. The diversion barrage is located on river Baspa at village Kuppa near Sangla and the power house is located near village Karcham about 800m upstream of the confluence of rivers Satluj and Baspa on NH-22 (Hindustan Tibet Road). Baspa Stage –II project has Karcham-Wangtoo hydel project on its downstream.

Project Features:

  • Head works consisting of a Diversion Barrage, a Power Intake and two Open Sedimentation Chambers to exclude silt from water used for generation of power.
  • Water conductor system consisting of a 7.95 km long Head Race Tunnel terminating into a Restricted Orifice type Underground Surge shaft for balancing the supply of water to the Turbines, followed by a Steel lined Pressure Shaft branching into three unit penstocks.
  • An Underground powerhouse housing three 100 MW Pelton turbine-generating units.
  • 400 kV switchyard comprising generator transformers and gas-insulated switch gear installed underground in a separate cavern.
  • Double circuit 400 kV transmission line from Baspa to Nathpa- Jhakri, 56.7 km in length, taking off from outdoor switchyard of Baspa II Powerhouse to feed into the Power grid at 400 kV Jhakri Sub-station (of 1500 MW Nathpa- Jhakri Hydroelectric project being developed by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited).
